Where the Ride Starts: The Spirit Behind Cache

Posted by Lars Mccleary on

At Cache, we’re not just building gear; we’re building a mindset. One rooted in the freedom to explore, the thrill of the unknown, and the belief that some of the best moments in life happen not at the destination, but right at the back of your truck.

I found my way to Cache in a pretty unexpected way. Back then, I was a junior at the University of Utah, working part-time at the DPS Skis factory in Salt Lake City. I had been following Dillion (co-founder) a pro skier for years on Instagram. One day I responded to one of his stories, just stoked on what he was doing. Next thing I knew, I was standing in the Cache warehouse unloading the first shipment of the all-new 2.0 pads.

They ended up offering me an internship on the spot. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that random message and that one afternoon of hauling boxes would completely change the trajectory of my life.

I didn’t take a straight path back to Cache. After college, I spent some time working in the mountains, chasing rivers in Montana and winters in Tahoe. But the spark I felt that first day unloading pads never really left. Eventually, I found my way back. These days, I help lead the brand, and I’ve worn just about every hat along the way. I’ve packed orders, answered DMs, written copy, pitched at trade shows. And through it all, what’s kept me fired up is simple: I believe in what we’re building.

We believe the tailgate is more than a piece of metal. It’s the launch pad for your next adventure. It’s where the ride starts, where beers are cracked and cheers are had. It’s where you high-five your friends after a wild descent or a long haul. It’s a place of laughter, dirt-caked stories, scraped shins, and full hearts. Your tailgate is your mobile basecamp, and it deserves gear that works as hard and plays as hard as you do.

Cache was born from that belief. We were tired of gear that didn’t last, that didn’t fit right, or that forced us to choose between form and function. So we built something better. Something tougher. Something modular. Something that reflects the way we actually live outdoors — on the move, fully loaded, and surrounded by people who make the journey worth it.

We’re a small crew, a family operation based in Utah, doing our best to design smart, long-lasting gear that keeps your truck and your crew dialed in. We’re not perfect, but we listen. Every review, every tag, every road trip photo — it all fuels what comes next.

Cache exists for the sunrise chasers, the trail builders, the weekend warriors, the dirtbags with good taste. Whether you’re shuttling six bikes up a fire road, truck camping with your kid, or just looking for a place to sit at the trailhead, our system adapts to your lifestyle. We’re not here to tell you how to get outside. We’re just here to help you do it better, to elevate your tailgate, your setup, and your whole damn adventure.

We believe in building more than just great gear. We’re here to build community. That’s why every purchase helps fuel our Pay It Forward program, supporting local trail crews, bike orgs, and outdoor advocacy groups. Because that moment at the tailgate — when you're clinking cans with your crew or helping a stranger fix their rig — that's where community is born. And we’re all in on keeping that spirit alive.

The back of your truck isn’t the end of the road. It’s where it all kicks off. It’s for shared beers, big laughs, and stories that outlast the scars.

And we believe it starts at the tailgate.

See you at the tailgate,
Lars – Brand Manager, Cache
