Basecamp Pad Combo Lock Troubleshooting

The combo lock is one of the most distinguishing features of the Basecamp Pad, it's what gives you real theft resistance and peace of mind on the trail. But if you've forgotten your combination, or suspect it got bumped to the wrong sequence, don't panic. Here's how to get back in.

Why the Lock Gets Scrambled

The most common culprit is accidental compression of the spring mechanism while the lock is originally being set. If the mechanism shifts while digits are moving, the lock can end up set to a combination different from what was intended, leaving you with a lock you can't open. Each digit needs to be set with the pin pressed in. Then release pressure from the pin after each digit and move to the next, press the pin in, set the number, and repeat on the last dial.

If you made a mistake during this step, here’s how you can get back in.

Option 1: Feel Your Way Through It

This is the same method used to crack any standard 3-digit combination lock, and it works on the Basecamp Pad locking carabiner with a bit of patience.

A note on orientation: When the pad is mounted on your tailgate, the digits appear upside down. That means what looks like the bottom row is actually the first digit you'll want to crack. Work from the bottom dial up.

Here's the process:

  1. Apply gentle, steady tension to the carabiner — don't force it, just maintain light pressure.

  2. While holding that tension, slowly rotate the bottom dial (the first digit) through all the numbers, one at a time.

  3. When you hit the correct number, you'll feel the mechanism compress ever so slightly more than usual, that's your signal.

  4. Once the first digit is confirmed, move to the middle dial and repeat.

  5. Then move to the top dial and repeat.

  6. With all three correct, the lock should open.

If you'd like a visual walkthrough, searching YouTube for "how to crack a 3-digit combination lock" will surface plenty of helpful tutorials that demonstrate the tension-and-feel method.

Option 2: Try Every Combination

If the feel method isn't working for you, there's always brute force. A 3-digit combination lock has 1,000 possible combinations, 000 through 999. Methodically working through them is tedious, but it will get you in eventually. We recommend starting out testing combinations that are around the three-digit combo you attempted to set, as it was most likely just one or two of these numbers that were set wrong.
